“Viagra for women” – A look at the little pink pill

Flibanserin, also nicknamed “Viagra for women” may soon be on the market. Flibanserin treats a lack of sexual desire in women who are of childbearing age. The condition is officially called hypoactive sexual desire disorder or HSDD and what it means is that a low sex drive causes personal distress and unhappiness in a women’s life. Perhaps a women is a relationship where her partner feels let down because he wants more during “sexy time.” It’s not that she doesn’t love her boyfriend or doesn’t want to have sex with him. It’s just the physical drive isn’t there and she wishes that there is something that she could do.

The pink pill may be available as soon as August if the FDA approves it. If Flibanserin is approved, it will be the first drug ever to treat low sex drive in women. The way it works is completely different that how male sexual enhancers work. Viagra and Cialis work by increasing bloodflow to the genitals and men take it right before sex. Flibanserin, on the other hand, works by changing chemicals in the brain, and women are to take it right before bedtime each night. Women who suffer from hypoactive sexual disorder need to know that they are not alone. One out of ten women have this disorder and relief in the form of a pill may be on its way.

This is the third time that the FDA considers the drug for approval. It has already been rejected twice due to concerns over side effects and whether Flibanserin works well enough to treat low sex drive in women. Some side effects noted include drowsiness, fainting, nausea, and low blood pressure. Additionally, their are concerns about what happens when the drug is consumed alongside drinking alcohol. Some critics say that the positive effects are “modest” considering the potential side effects. However, activists for the drug say women who are suffering for HSDD are crippled by their condition and the impact it has on sustaining loving, healthy relationships. A drug like Flibanserin has great potential to improve the lives of thousands of women around the world.

“”It’s about time women have some choices too,” an FDA advisor said. Even if the FDA chooses not to approve Flibanserin, the discussion and awareness hopefully opens up new opportunities for similar drugs in the future.
